PREDATOR - Design
The Predator 21 has been primarily designed as a fast cruiser capable of safely and comfortably accomodating a family of 2 adults and 2 or 3 children for day
trips or for weekends away and for those more adventurous it is quite suitable for trips lasting a few weeks. The kick-up centreboard and rudder are
particularly suitable for shallow water cruising and beaching. Safety and comfort of the crew is of paramount importance and a huge, deep, rope free cockpit
lends itself to child friendly family cruising.
The hull shape comprises a very fine entry to cut through the chop, merging into a vee shape in the forward sections which minimises pounding in rough
seas and when motoring at speed. The midships sections of the hull are rounded, running into a broad flat section aft which minimises pitching,
encourages early planing and provides excellent performance under power.
The hull has very little rocker and instead of utilising a large amount of rocker at the stern to provide "negative lift" while sailing at speed, this hull incorporates
"dynamic lift" through the transition from fine entry to vee section to rounded section. A notable feature is the enormous flare in the hull coming aft and the rapid
increase in buoyancy which lifts the boat gracefully and easily over the bigger waves.
A Feature of the Predator 21 is the way the outer hulls slide under the main hull wings making a very compact and streamlined package. This gives
enormous advantages when towing, for storage and just manouevring the boat in crowded areas. It motors well with the hulls tucked under and is still a
very stable platform. Note that the hulls slide up and out at an angle of 7 degrees, raising them to a level where they are just in the water when not sailing.
With the outer hulls just in the water it is a very stable boat at anchor unlike some other trimarans that, having their outer hulls high up in the air, tip
uncomfortably from side to side while at rest. In anything more than a slight breeze the windward hull will lift clear of the water when sailing.
The Predator 17 boasts an incredibly elegant and streamilined hull. As smaller boats such as this are likely to experience the short, sharp chop
encountered in shallow water, the entry has been made extremely fine in order to slice through the waves, providing a smooth graceful ride. The narrow,
rounded hull sections offer minimal drag and this boat will ghost along when there is barely a breeze and get up and fly like a miniature 60 footer when
the wind gets up.
The pivoting centreboard and rudder are designed to kick back and therefore shallow water sailing is not a problem.

Designed to satisfy many needs, the Predator 17 is a great family fun boat / cruiser with a huge cockpit for a boat this size and large trampolines giving
the family room to spread out. It is easy to sail, turns on a dime and is light and responsive to steer. The foil section centreboard allows stunning upwind
performance. It will easily plane under power with only a 4 hp outboard and 2 people on board. Reports of over 15 knots under sail have been made using
only very basic 14 foot off-the-beach cat components. With a larger racing rig and 16 or 17 foot outer hulls, this boat will be a rocket. Rig up an assymetric
spinnaker, clip on the trapeze and hang on !!
